Dust in the Deep End?

How to Protect Your Pool from the Saharan Storm

A storm is headed our way—but not the kind with wind and rain. Instead, this one’s bringing a gritty visitor from across the Atlantic: dust. And lots of it.

A massive Saharan dust cloud is expected to sweep across parts of Florida, Louisiana, and the southeastern U.S. during the week of June 9th, 2025. It’s not new—we see it every year around this time—but this one is shaping up to be the most significant dust event of the season so far.

So, what exactly is happening?

Each summer, high-altitude winds scoop up dust and sand from the Sahara Desert and carry it thousands of miles across the ocean, landing right here in the Sunshine State (which, ironically, will be looking a bit less sunny). This phenomenon is known as the Saharan Air Layer, and it’s both fascinating and frustrating.

The Upside (and the Downside)

Meteorologists note that while this dust can worsen allergy symptoms and reduce air quality for some, it also plays a surprising role in reducing hurricane activity. The dry, stable air it carries can actually suppress tropical storm development—something we’re always happy to hear at the start of hurricane season.

Still, you’ll likely notice when it hits:

  • Hazy skies and reduced visibility.

  • “Dirty rain” if showers are in the forecast—raindrops can trap dust and leave muddy spots on cars, patios, and, yes, your pool.

  • Sunsets and sunrises become more dramatic and colorful thanks to the extra particles in the air bending sunlight.

And while health officials don’t expect severe air quality issues, allergy sufferers and those with respiratory conditions should take extra precautions.

But Let’s Talk About Your Pool...

If you own a pool—especially in central or southern Florida—this dust cloud could cause some issues. Once the particles settle, they can introduce fine debris and minerals into your water, making it cloudy and chemically unbalanced. Here’s what you need to know:

How the Dust Affects Your Pool

  • Cloudy Water & Sediment: Fine dust particles settle into your pool, creating a murky appearance and leaving a layer of grit on the floor and walls.

  • Chemical Imbalance: The dust carries trace minerals like iron, phosphorus, and nitrogen. These can shift your water’s pH and promote algae growth if not managed quickly.

  • Filter Overload: All that extra debris means your filters will be working overtime, possibly clogging faster and needing more frequent maintenance.

How to Protect Your Pool

  • Cover It Up: Use a pool cover whenever your pool’s not in use. This is the easiest way to prevent dust from getting in.

  • Skim and Vacuum Daily: Remove floating debris with a skimmer and vacuum any settled dust from the floor and steps.

  • Test Water Chemistry Often: Check pH, chlorine, and alkalinity levels daily during the dust event, and rebalance as needed.

  • Clean Filters Frequently: Rinse or backwash your filter more often than usual. If it’s nearing the end of its life, now might be the time to replace it.
