What is the Clear Water Program & How Does it Work?
The clear water program combines two key systems, AOP and Salt Chlorination System,to deliver results that will make you wonder how you could have ever got into any other water.
The AOP or Advanced Oxidation Process uses what is known as a hydroxyl radical to get rid of almost all of the contaminants in the water.
What is the hydroxyl radical?
Hydroxyl radicals are molecules made up of one hydrogen atom and one oxygen atom with a free electron. They are very reactive are used to sanitize water and air by destroying unwanted contaminants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), chloramines, pathogens, viruses and more.
Hydroxyl radicals attack essential cell components in bacteria and oxidize the surface structures of viruses, causing them to burst. Hydroxyl radicals can be produced by various methods, such as advanced oxidation processes (AOP), ultraviolet radiation, ozone, or water vapor.
The chart to the left shows the oxidation potential of the hydroxyl radical to other sanitizers. This is basically how powerful a sanitizer it is. (Remember it is all natural — no harsh or toxic chemical, like Florine–very toxic )
What does all of this mean? It means using the Advanced Oxidation Process method, you can sanitize the water in your pool to a level that goes way beyond what chlorine, bromine or acid can do and you do it without any harsh chemicals.
What about the salt system, if AOP is so good why do I still need to add a salt system?
There are a couple of advantages to adding a salt system to your pool.
- It softens the water making in more comfortable to swim in.
- Your salt system’s real purpose is to generate chlorine. We still need chlorine because it is so effective in killing certain types of organisms, like algae. Nothing works as well.
The key here is no matter what, you will have to keep some level of chlorine in the pool, but how much? To answer this question it helps to understand a little of how chlorine works.
Because we want to minimize our exposure to toxic chemicals we want to add the chlorine via the salt chlorine generation system.
This system is a device that uses electrolysis to generate chlorine from saltwater. The salt cell consists of parallel plates made from titanium and coated with ruthenium and iridium.
As the saltwater flows through the cell, a low-voltage direct current is applied to the plates, causing the salt to split into sodium and chlorine.
The salt makes the water soft and the chlorine kills stuff or oxidizes inorganic compounds.
The chlorine reacts with water to form hypochlorous acid (HOCL) and sodium hypochlorite(OCL), which are the sanitizing agents in pools and spas. It is the hypochlorous acid (HOCL) that is the important part of chlorine and what does most of the sanitization. It is powerful because it has a neutral charge and slips past the cell wall to kill the pathogen
The problem is chlorine is very reactive and if it gets the chance it will combine with other contaminants in the water before killing what it needs to kill. The result of this is you need much more chlorine to kill the algae.
The goal is to put the absolute minimum chlorine in the water and to do this only the contaminants that chlorine is most effective at killing can be in the water.
This is where using AOP and the Salt Cell system makes a great combination. AOP gets rid of the majority of the contaminants in the water allowing the chlorine to be super effective and this means that you can use substantially less chlorine.
The combination of AOP and a salt-generating system allows you to dramatically reduce the amount of harsh chemicals you put into your pool.
