Your Clean and Clear Water Program
Clean and Clear Water
The goal is simple: water that’s crystal clear, safe to swim in, and easy to maintain week after week.
Give your pool a personal wellness plan.
Each pool is a little different. Create your own unique plan that addresses your pool’s specific needs will let you easily reach the main goal of keeping the water balanced, clean, and clear.
Benefits of a Clear Water Program
Always Inviting: Sparkling, clear water looks great and makes people want to jump in.
Healthier Swims: Balanced chemistry keeps bacteria and algae under control, ensuring safe water.
Less Chemical Demand: Enzymes take the load off chlorine, meaning you use less sanitizer over time.
Longer Equipment Life: Proper balance prevents scale, corrosion, and clogged filters.
Easier Maintenance: With a steady routine, there are fewer emergencies, less guesswork, and lower costs.
Prevents Smells & Scum: Enzymes and regular oxidation keep away cloudy water, odors, and greasy waterlines.
What Happens If Water Gets Contaminated
Cloudy or Green Water: Algae and bacteria can quickly turn a pool from clear to uninviting.
Unhealthy Swims: Contaminated water can irritate eyes, skin, and even spread recreational water illnesses.
Higher Chemical Costs: Once things go bad, it takes shock treatments, algaecides, and lots of chlorine to recover.
Equipment Damage: Scale, corrosion, and clogged filters shorten the life of pumps, heaters, and plumbing.
Unhappy Swimmers: Bad water leads to bad experiences—complaints, frustration, and less pool enjoyment.
Time Drain: Restoring a pool from “green swamp mode” takes hours (or days) of extra work compared to steady weekly care.
A Clear Water Program
Keeping your pool water clear and safe isn’t complicated when you follow a steady routine. This program combines balanced water chemistry, regular cleaning, and enzyme support to prevent problems before they start.
Remember always 3 keys to clear water
- Filtration
- Circulation
- Chemistry
Notice chemistry is last on the list. If the first two are not effective, chemicals will not get the job done.
A Customized Pool Wellness Program
It is important to remember each pool is unique, even your neighbor’s pool is going to have different requirements than yours. They may not be extreme but they are different and that difference can be what makes taking care of your pool easy or hard.
Think of a Clear Water Program as the pool’s personal wellness plan. Just like we stay healthy with good nutrition and regular exercise, your pool stays healthy with balanced water, the right mix of sanitizers, and a little help from modern products like enzymes.
Here are some of the factors that should be considered:
- Environmental Factors
- Bather Load (How the Pool is Used)
- Equipment Setup how your pump affects water quality
- Filtration effects of a dirty filter
- Heating System
- Water Source
- Special Features
Clear Water Foundations
Keeping your pool water clear and safe isn’t complicated when you follow a steady routine. This program combines balanced water chemistry, regular cleaning, and enzyme support to prevent problems before they start
Step 1: Foundation of Clarity
Balance Your Water
Check water at least once a week with a reliable test kit or have it tested at a pool store. Aim for these ranges:
- pH: 7.4 – 7.6
- Total Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm
- Calcium Hardness: 200 – 400 ppm
- Cyanuric Acid (Stabilizer): 30 – 50 ppm (Salt pools: 60–80 ppm)
- Free Chlorine: 1 – 3 ppm (Residential)
Keeping water in these ranges ensures chlorine works effectively, prevents cloudy water, and protects your pool equipment.
Step 2: Sanitizing
Maintain Chlorine or Salt System
- Run your chlorine feeder or salt system daily.
Shock or oxidize the pool once a week (or after heavy use, rain, or parties) to remove combined chlorine and organic waste.
Learn how contaminants can waste chlorine
Step 3: Add Enzymes
Weekly Support
- Once a week, pour the recommended dose of a pool enzyme product into the water.
- Enzymes break down sunscreen, body oils, and pollen—things chlorine has a hard time removing.
Benefits: Less scum, fewer odors, and lower chlorine demand.
Step 4: Adopt a Brushing Regime
(Secret sauce to Clear Water)
Brushing is one of the most overlooked steps in pool care. Even with good chemistry, algae can cling to surfaces if they aren’t brushed.
- Brush at least once a week.
- Focus on trouble spots: steps, ladders, behind ladders, corners, and the waterline.
- Use a nylon brush for vinyl or fiberglass, and a stainless/nylon combo for plaster or concrete.
- Brushing stirs up debris so the filter and sanitizer can do their job.
Think of brushing as giving your pool a gentle “scrub” to stay fresh and prevent algae.
Step 5: Regular Cleaning & Filtration
- Skim debris daily (leaves, bugs).
- Empty skimmer and pump baskets weekly.
- Vacuum or run an automatic cleaner weekly.
Backwash/clean your filter as needed (or every 4–6 weeks for cartridge filters).
Step 6: Preventive Additives
- Algaecide: A small weekly dose prevents growth.
- Phosphate remover: Keeps phosphate levels low, starving algae of food.
Clarifier: Use only if water looks dull—don’t overuse.
